Geese in Alameda test positive for bird flu

(KRON) -- On Friday, county vector control officials said bird flu was detected in geese found at an Alameda beach. Canada geese collected on Oct. 8 and 12 at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), more commonly known as bird flu.

"The public is advised that infected birds could be found throughout the East Bay and to take precautions to avoid exposure," county officials wrote.

Avian influenza primarily affects wild birds, with cases typically increasing during the fall and winter. Although the risk to the public is low, human infections can occur through close or prolonged exposure to infected birds or contaminated environments, officials said.

The East Bay Regional Park District is monitoring the situation and encouraging visitors to take precautions to reduce exposure.

Park visitors are advised to follow safety tips:

  • Do not touch wild birds. If you discover a deceased bird, maintain a distance of at least 50 feet.
  • Keep children and dogs away from birds, bird carcasses, and bird droppings.
  • Report sick or dead birds. Contact Alameda County Vector Control at 510-567-6800, or Contra Costa County Vector Control at 925-685-9301.
