BLOOMINGTON — A portion of State Road 45/46 in Bloomington has officially been renamed “Bob Knight Memorial Way” to honor legendary Indiana University men’s basketball coach Bob Knight.
Friday morning, family, friends and partners of the late coach joined legislators and the Indiana Department of Transportation for the dedication ceremony.
The newly designated stretch of highway spans between College Avenue and Fee Lane.
Knight coached the Indiana University men’s basketball team from 1971 to 2000, leading the Hoosiers to three national championships, 11 Big Ten championships and one National Invitation Tournament title. He also guided the U.S. men’s basketball team to a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Knight died on Nov. 1, 2023, at the age of 83. He ranks 14th on the all-time college basketball coaches list for career victories and was named National Coach of the Year in 1975, 1976, 1987 and 1989. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.
The highway dedication is set to happen following the passage of House Concurrent Resolution 4, authored by District 60 State Representative Peggy Mayfield and approved in February 2026.
